Our Proposal
The Implicit and Diversity
The universe of the implicit was discovered by Eugene Gendlin, who has left us a wonderful legacy for HUMAN BEINGS. This universe came to light in 1980 when Focusing was published. The implicit is the world of feelings, and these feelings are driven by carryingforward when they arise in our bodies. Diversity supports and promotes what is unique, and what is unique about Focusing is that entire universe in which our interaction takes place—silent and powerful because it creates meaning.
Despite the rapid expansion of Focusing, the Implicit began twenty years before that wonderful book on Focusing was published in 1980. The Implicit initially emerged as “experiencing.” The creation of meaning as a philosophical discovery took place in 1962 with the publication of ECM. But the development of the Philosophy of the Implicit is Eugene Gendlin’s legacy par excellence, presenting us with a thoroughly comprehensive universe in which human phenomena find their full place, allowing us to know and access a dimension where the human being is understood without any fragmentation or dichotomy.
The universe of the Implicit encompasses key concepts that allow us to name and act upon new phenomena such as CARRYINGFORWARD, the felt sense, implication, and occurring, etc. Diversity unfolds as a consequence of singularity and originality—and, of course, is energized by CARRYINGFORWARD. The Implicit is the silent interaction we experience whenever we feel carried forward within diversity; the Implicit is the diversity of all that exists.
Focusing is a powerful tool of the Implicit
Since 1980, we have come to know Focusing as a therapeutic intervention tool with remarkable results: the body achieves an unprecedented inner peace, and a therapeutic change takes place as a result of a deeply felt reframing. This change is all-encompassing in terms of behavior, one’s own identity, worldview, and vision of the future, enabling the client to achieve an irreversible transformation.
Focusing is a new body-based tool that revolutionized psychotherapy. That paperback book set a publishing record of half a million copies in the English-speaking world with its first edition.
Eugene Gendlin was its creator; he was born in Vienna on December 25, 1926. At the age of 13, Gene arrived in the United States with his family in January 1939. He earned a degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago. At age 28, he met Carl Rogers and learned the art of listening from him, joining his research team. C. Rogers had been awarded the APA Prize in 1942.
The APA (American Psychological Association) awarded Eugene Gendlin the prize for Researcher of the Year on four occasions: 1970, 2011, 2014, and posthumously in 2021.
Eugene Gendlin’s best-known works are those related to clinical practice: Focusing (1979, 1980, 2005). F.O.T. Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy (1994), Let Your Body Interpret Your Dreams (1993)—his vast body of work transcends psychotherapy through his foundational creation: the new philosophy of the Implicit.
Focusing has been translated into 25 languages, and its practice as a method has spread worldwide thanks to the work of the Focusing Institute, with international outreach led by the International Focusing Community—founded by Gene and expanded exponentially by his wife, Mary Hendricks—which now has 240 coordinators in 43 countries. Today, this organization is known as the International Focusing Institute (TIFI).
The world has come to know Focusing as a therapeutic tool—a six-step method created by Gendlin—and numerous new forms of the Focusing method have emerged, which Gendlin validated through his deep commitment to cultural and individual diversity.
Focusing Phenomenon
Based on our fifty years of Focusing practice and drawing on Gendlin’s philosophical works, we have been able to discover and systematize the implicit, experiential process that the client undergoes when guided through Focusing.
We have observed a universal pattern of behavior in the client’s “signifying body”: the engagement and unfolding characteristic of a carriedforwar process that gradually creates new, felt meaning through a universal experiential journey. We can clearly visualize the movement of the experiential wheel as it passes through key moments and as change occurs. These new concepts are thoroughly covered in the annual training program, and the F.F. version of this program has been widely accepted—we are now preparing to continue with its 2027 edition.
Focusing as a phenomenon (Riveros & Riveros, 2024) is what occurs within the client when they are guided through the Focusing method. What happens within the client is a bodily phenomenon of experiential reframing that alleviates the anxiety and symptoms the client has experienced up to that point.
The Focusing Phenomenon has emerged from therapeutic practice in various contexts and is inspired by A Theory of Personality Change (1964), A Process Model (2009), Experiencing and the Creation of Meaning (1962), Implicit Precision (2005), and (1993). The Spanish titles were made possible through our specialized translation process carried out by our founders. The works were translated at the express request of Eugene Gendlin.
Focusing Phenomenon Training 2027
After years of practicing Experiential Psychotherapy and Focusing—developed by Eugene Gendlin—and following 50 years of applying Focusing in various settings beyond our clinical practice, we have succeeded in systematizing and teaching Focusing as a phenomenon, such that any Focusing method can be applied, provided it follows its own steps with variations that promote diversity. And by recognizing the key moments, a person trained in F.F. achieves greater effectiveness and peace of mind through the confirmation that a change has been achieved. Any Focusing method can be practiced by now looking at the client, visualizing the occurrence of change during those key moments, being able to identify them, and thus verifying with certainty that a total, experiential change has taken place from within the body.
In this way, the Focusing Facilitator (FF) or Focusing Oriented Therapist (FOT) can draw on an innovative practice, enabling them to identify the key experiential moments of the Focusing Phenomenon. This understanding of the phenomenon—this experiential map grounded in the implicit world—is what occurs in the space between the client and the therapist, at the center of the Focusing interaction, where empathic resonance interacts with the client’s felt sense, through a dynamic of self-driven involvement and unfolding.
PROGRAM
Focusing as a Phenomenon (FP) has a prominent experiential dimension that emphasizes interactive practice and intensive reading, supported by the solid philosophy of the Implicit. It involves intensive practice and intensive reading of philosophy, which is explained through Focusing. According to Gendlin, Focusing demonstrates in practice that therapeutic change begins with the body’s involvement, guided by the felt sense.
CERTIFICATION:
Focusing Facilitator (FF) or Focusing Oriented Therapist (FOT)
The student will receive the certificate in question in digital format immediately after completing the program.
About this certification: Upon completion of the program, our Focusing Chile Institute will issue a Focusing Chile diploma corresponding to this certification as a Focusing Facilitator (FF) or Focusing-Oriented Therapist (FOT). This diploma is licensed by Eugene Gendlin, and the following coordinators will serve as mentors for the training: Gabriela Riveros and Edgardo Riveros.
To obtain the diploma from the International Institute of Focusing (TIFI) corresponding to this certification, you must submit a letter of recommendation from your mentors. It is important to note that, for this purpose, the letter of recommendation from Focusing Chile to TIFI is included in the training for all those interested in obtaining it. Once you have completed the program, you will receive a document outlining the steps to follow in this regard.
Program Overview
This program was developed using an experiential and practical methodology centered on Focusing as a phenomenon. This approach to Focusing was created by the Focusing Chile Institute, based on our experience and knowledge gained over more than 40 years of specializing in the phenomenon of human change across various fields.
Our program has been designed in a combination of classroom and hands-on learning, supported by an innovative technology platform specifically designed for Focusing training. This blended learning (b-learning) format allows us to extend Focusing to more remote areas and provides an experiential dimension for meaningful and effective learning. The program is designed to create an academic and experiential context so that graduates will be able to: learn to apply Focusing to others and apply Focusing to various human contexts beyond the clinical setting.
This training program is equivalent to Focusing Training Levels One, Two, and Three, offered under license from Eugene Gendlin.
